Help with Searching

Databases

Knowledge Basket Databases consist of several "Collections" which can be searched together or in any combination. You choose which collection to search by selecting the appropriate checkbox.

For Example, here the user has chosen to search Pacnews and Pacific Media Centre - but not Magazines:

Simple Searches

At its simplest, the search form can be used simply by entering the search words and phrases, separated by comma's in one box, and clicking on the Search button.

The result will be articles retrieved with any of the words and phrases in them, sorted by relevance.

For Example:

Combining Words

The easiest way to combine sets of words or phrases, is the enter the next set of words in the second box, and leave the button "Required" selected. Note in the example, the user has chosen the Sort By "Date" button to sort the results by the most recent articles:

Explicit Search Syntax

Instead of using comma's to separate search terms you can combine them in different ways using AND, OR, NOT, and <NEAR> (<NEAR> means the two words must be within 5 words of each other)

For Example:

Expert Search Syntax

The Knowledge Basket Search Engine supports a very large number of search operators. You can use <SENTENCE> <PARAGRAPH> and you can specify that word order is important. For details see the "Advanced Search Techniques" section in the tips page.
